PROGRAM AND SERVICES

The NAACP has been servicing the African American community by creating and administering programs and services which ensure that the voices of African Americans would be heard and their rights would be respected. From the ballot box to the classroom; organizers, volunteers and leaders of the NAACP branches dedicate their time and lives to bringin about social awareness and liberation. These programs and service are consistently growing and progressing. The NAACP prides itself in offering viable programs.

EDUCATIONAL SERVICES: Contact Elder Rainey

GED CLASSES

Program is available for those seeking a GED diploma or assistance with literacy. Program hours are 9:00 am to 1:00 p.m. Contact: Ms. Harrington

 

Parent Educational Council

Caring adults are available to assist parents/guardians and other care givers with effective advocacy for student’s quality education. Council meets every second Thursday at 6:30 P.M.

 

Educational Forums

Workshops are routinely available to inform the community of academic support services, new school policies or an opportunity to network with educators and other parents/guardians/caregivers for support.

 

Educational Complaints

Investigation of allegations of discriminatory practices toward students. Attendances at school conferences or hearings are welcomed with proper notification.

 

ACT-SO

ACT-SO is a yearlong enrichment program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.  The program relies on the dedication and commitment of community and business leaders who volunteer as mentors and coaches to promote academic and artistic excellence.  Through this collaborative effort, participating students develop the confidence and skills needed to excel in school and in life.

Youth Council

The NAACP believes strongly that future leaders must be developed today, and such development is ongoing in the Youth & College Division, created in 1936. Today there are more than 30,000 young people representing 600 Youth Councils, High School Chapters and College Chapters actively involved in the fight for civil rights. The NAACP has one of the largest organized groups of young people of any secular organization in the country.

District Monitoring Advisory Committee

Appointees to the legal committee supporting a quality education as dictated by the Bradley vs. Pinellas County School District (case filed 1964). This NAACP representation continues in collaboration with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Mandated training on history of segregation and Pinellas County Schools is provided annually and/or with the acceptance of new members.

 

SOUTH CENTRAL LITERACY AND TECHNOLOGY SERVICES:

Computer Literacy Services: Wednesdays: 6:30 p.m.

The NAACP has renovated the office facility and partnered with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in a grant to implement the South Side Literacy and Technology Center. Classes are under way to provide computer technology training free to interested adults, high school and GED students. Classes in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Publisher are offered free on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Software Training: Word; Excel, PowerPoint Training: Saturdays and upon demand
